Clutter Book Club: V

We're reading Thomas Pynchon's classic (and debut) novel this week! The infamously reclusive author is one of our faves and this work is a tour de force.  Did you know....he's appeared in two episodes of The Simpsons?!

FAMOUS QUOTES FROM V:
  • “Life's single lesson: that there is more accident to it than a man can ever admit to in a lifetime and stay sane.”
  • “To have humanism we must first be convinced of our humanity. As we move further into decadence this becomes more difficult.”
  • “He decided that we suffer from great temporal homesickness for the decade we were born in.”
  • “Love with your mouth shut, help without breaking your ass or publicizing it: keep cool, but care.”
  • “I am the twentieth century. I am the ragtime and the tango; sans-serif, clean geometry. I am the virgin's-hair whip and the cunningly detailed shackles of decadent passion. I am every lonely railway station in every capital of Europe. I am the Street, the fanciless buildings of government. the cafe-dansant, the clockwork figure, the jazz saxophone, the tourist-lady's hairpiece, the fairy's rubber breasts, the travelling clock which always tells the wrong time and chimes in different keys."

Obsessions of the Week: 30JUN to 06JUL13

Some things we're obsessed with this week:
  • New Zealand's newest pop superstar, Lorde, is about to take over the world. And she's only 16 (SIXTEEN!!!). A mix of Lana Del Rey and the xx, Lorde is the coolest thing from New Zealand since The Flight of the Conchords. Check out the AMAZING, "Royals"...it will surely be one of your top summer jamz.
    • We're also mildly obsessed with Miley Cyrus' new(ish) song, "We Can't Stop"...seriously, we can't stop listening to WCS, and we don't really want to...MC is ALL sorts of grown up.
  • We're fully ready for Target's new FEED USA line...buy clothes, feed kids in need, everyone is a winner! Go here to learn more about their awesome mission and see some of their wares.
  • Nominated by THE Katherine Sandoz...Christine Hall's Instagram is off the chains. Off the chains, off the walls, out the park. It's so many prepositional phrases and then some. Give her a follow on the ol' gram and everywhere else on the internet for some great photography.

Brooke's Look: Shelf It

Shelves can be tricky. It can be tricky to pick out the perfect shelf for your space because are there are so many out there, AND it can be tricky to style a shelf without making it look too full, messy, or outdated.

We built these shelves using a 9" deep piece of plywood and L brackets (from Home Depot or any home store).  If you buy a six feet piece, chop it into three 2' shelves and you have a symmetric, simple, yet refined look. I always go with an odd number because I think it stands out a little more, but two or four shelves would work as well...I also look for a chunked out, funky piece of lumber...makes it more unique, personalized and nature-y. Stain the shelves to your taste...I chose a medium stain, but really anything (including painting them) will work.

L Brackets are a simple solution, and I love the way these shelves look a little rusty-crusty, and a little industrial with the simple brackets. Now let's talk about styling your one-of-a-kind shelves...

A shelf is part organizational tool, part reflection of your overall taste.  Our aesthetic, as always, is combining things you love to tell a story. If you love it and they are complimentary pieces (in size or color), it WILL work!

We change our shelves with the changing of the seasons, sometimes much more often (weekly/daily/hourly)...but currently we have a great old, funky camera that I found at a thrift shop, some framed photography my husband found at a street fair in New York, and an awesome sculpture we received as a gift from a local artist in Savannah.

Have fun with your accessories, let them speak to you and to the other pieces in your room. And if y'all have any questions, leave a comment below or come find us at Clutter!

xoxo, Brooke

Get To Know: Cameron Cheney

Brioche French Toast with Warm Strawberry Compote

This year, B. Tillman got a brand new name and a brand new chef in Cameron Cheney. Formerly Cookie Bar & Grill, B. Tillman is shaking things up on the Savannah food scene and Chef Cameron is killing it daily (and now on Sunday for brunch!!). Come on, just look at his food!! #DROOLING. Run, don't walk, to B. Tillman today...but before you do...get to know a little bit about Chef Cameron Cheney below...

CAMERON CHENEY
Chef, B. Tillman

CLUTTER FURNISHINGS & INTERIORS: When did you know you were born to cook?
CAMERON CHENEY: I wouldn't say that I was born to cook. When I was growing up, I thought I was born to be a lawyer. I cooked to get through college and then realized five years into my English Literature degree that I was more passionate about food than the written word.

CF&I: Who are your culinary influences?
CC: Hugh Acheson, obviously. And Julia Child - I appreciate her unpretentious approach to a field riddled with pretention and condescension.

CF&I: What is your favorite meal to prepare?
CC: I love searing fish of any kind, specifically scallops. When someone asks me what my favorite color is, my reply is the color of a perfectly seared scallop.

CF&I: If you were on Iron Chef, what mystery ingredient would you most fear?
CC: Razor clams. They are delicious and unique, but their shells are super brittle and difficult to plate beautifully.

CF&I: What was it like working for Hugh Acheson?
CC: Life changing, eye opening. He changed how I approached cooking and heightened my passion. He was like that high school teacher that made you love Faulkner.

CF&I: If you could work in any chef's kitchen, past or present, whose would it be?
CC: Auguste Escoffier, as far as past chefs go. Presently, I'd love to cook with Thomas Keller.

CF&I: What is your guilty pleasure?
CC: McDonald's Chicken McNuggets. And Combos.

CF&I: Describe B. Tillman in five words.
CC: Honest, unpretentious, eclectic, familial, and FUN!

Product Placement: Southern Firefly's Nashville Candle

My hubby shot this photo of an awesome Southern Firefly Candle in his office back in Hawaii and sent it to me to show some Clutter/SFF love. If you've ever been in an a male locker room, you know what my husband's office smelled like before I bought him this little travel tin...NOW it smells like a brilliant mixture of leather and whiskey (Nashville). SO MUCH BETTER! Come smell some Southern Firefly for yourself at Clutter, or click on the link to the right (our one and only advertiser!!) to see their full menu of scents.

Want to get to know a little more about the folks behind Southern Firefly...check out the awesome small business success story of the Ainsworths here

Dream Home of the Day: 61-785 Papailoa Road, Haleiwa, HI

In Hawaii, we don't live far from this beautiful home...but we might as well live on a different planet. Haleiwa is a small, eclectic enclave on Oahu's North Shore and this home is a real gem. The views are everything, but if you have to stay inside, this place is pretty good, too. Click on the photos to check out more of this home via Trulia.

Artist of the Day: Frida Kahlo

My two favorite unibrows in the whole world belong to Hugh Acheson and Frida Kahlo. Both are amazingly talented geniuses, powerhouses in their respective crafts...maybe it's the power of the extra facial hair...probably they are both just so great!  Click on the photos to see more of Ms. Kahlo's work.

Styled By Lynn: Do Lampshades Right

There's quite a bit that goes into picking the right shade for your lamp. Harp height, shade size, color, contrast between the shade and lamp are all extremely important considerations when your shade shopping (our version of throwing shade...). Up first, the wrong way to do a shade...

See how you can see the saddle in the above lamp. The harp is TOO high. You can fix this with a harp change or by finding a new shade. Either is viable...and sometimes it's easer to switch the harp since it can be a task to find the exact right shade. Below we fixed the harp and look how beautiful it looks!!
Doesn't that look better?! Perfect harp height, perfect shade...makes the lamp really stand out and shine (pun intended).  So we got the right height...how about a change of color?!
Perfect! Love the neutral toned shade...really adds a little something. And the fun thing is, you can always change the color to get a brand new look in any space. Find great, durable shades that you can transition in between lamps and in between rooms and you'll have several looks for the price of two shades!

Clutter has a huge array of lampshades available in every height, color, and size. Come see us and lets throw some shade together!!
