Get To Know: Emily McCarthy

The multi-hyphenate that is THE Emily McCarthy (brand stylist - lifestyle designer - curator - blogger) is set to take Savannah and the Coastal Empire by storm. Her beautiful website is a blend of Lilly Pulitzer funk, Tory Burch sophistication, and Emily's own fanciful flavor. If you're looking for a custom monogram or just some design inspiration, look no further than Savannah's own, Mrs. McCarthy. Get to know a little bit more about her and her amazing company, Emma J Designs, below:

CF&I: What all encompasses the job of “Lifestyle Designer”? It sounds amazing.
EMILY MCCARTHY: I love the term Lifestyle Designer because it encompasses everything I love to design. I have a degree in Graphic Design and Photography, but “Graphic Designer” always felt like it didn’t explain my full realm of design. Although I am designing the visual graphic elements of a product, brand or wedding, I feel that the materials and overall aesthetic of the final product are just as important. There are designers that produce beautiful graphics; however, I feel that I’m able to bring product design and printing experience to the table, which allows me to provide a wider array of attention to detail. I like to believe that I’m styling an entire brand from the logo down to the paper selection and packaging for the product. The client receives a more cohesive final product by working this way.  I’m also designing a lifestyle brand for my own collection – I hope to bring a new version of southern style to the market.

CF&I: What are your go-to design elements right now? We know you’re a Greek Key girl…any other signature Emily McCarthy looks of the moment.
EM:  You’re right! Greek key is a go to and has been for years – long before it flooded our pinterest feeds. But what I love about my signature greek key pattern is that I created it out of my initials – so it’s classic greek key but a different twist. I feel like it’s a bit more authentic this way and I often design for my branding clients this way. I incorporate elements of their logo into classic pattern design to compliment their brand. This way, the client receives original patterns – not stock that is accessible to everyone.  Going back to patterns, cheetah and animal prints have always been a love of mine too. We just painted a cheetah accent wall in my studio and I adore it. We also just had Daisy Sullivant hand-paint our dining room – a huge orange Kelly Wearstler inspired accent wall and a gold brushed wall to anchor the surrounding walls. Daisy used to work for Kelly and she is UBER talented. I adore geometrics – much more than florals. I like clean repeats and 1-2 color patterns.

CF&I: If you could give a Lifestyle makeover to any celebrity, who would it be and why?
EM: I would love to do a Dorothy Draper twist on someone – maybe someone drastic…cough cough...Miley.

CF&I: Your home is beautiful…we professionally stalk you on Instagram. What is your favorite room in your house at the moment? What elements really stand out?
EM: You are too funny! I stalk your instagram too! Of course for new goodies for my home! I would say it’s a toss up between the living room and dining room.  The living room has freshly painted floor to ceiling pure white paint, black and white striped window treatments from Carlette and lots of gold, emerald green and black accents with the help of Kathryn Myrick and Clutter! I also love the oversized gallery wall that I keep adding to – everything from black and white darkroom prints, block prints, quotes to my son’s silhouette. Then….there’s the dining room that I talked about earlier. The white, orange and gold accents make my heart sing. Besides Daisy’s masterpiece, I love my Imperial Trellis accent chairs from Alison Seeger and World’s Away bar cart set up. I’m a sucker for vintage mid-century barware – it’s a serious problem.

CF&I: What style rules do you live by? Any that you love to break?!
EM: No rules necessary, I just wear what I like – don’t really care what anyone else thinks. I love mixing patterns, chunky jewelry, statement glasses and classic silhouettes. I also wish there were more bold patterns in women’s apparel. I often want to take some of my favorite interior fabrics and have dresses made from them – imagine a classic sheath in imperial trellis – delish! I also love wearing white year round – I think it’s all about the execution and the pairing of color and texture.

CF&I: Where can we shop Emily McCarthy products?
EM: You can shop online at www.EmilyMcCarthy.com/Shoppe or attend one of our Prosecco Parties! We are planning a few for Spring so make sure and join our mailing list to receive an invitation. We hope to eventually have a retail space but I’m waiting for the right spot to pop open.

CF&I: What does 2014 hold for the Emily McCarthy brand?
EM: Lots of new products! We are working on quite a few partnerships with companies to produce more serving pieces, glassware, linens, candles, accessories and maybe even apparel. Time will tell!

CF&I: Describe THE Emily McCarthy design in five words.
EM: Timeless. Stylish. Colorful. Gold. Bold.

Get To Know: Shawndra Russell

Self-described Savannah advocate, Shawndra Russell is a social media maverick and author of one of our favorite reads, Couple Friends. She's got some great advice for aspiring authors in her brand new e-guide, How to Become a Freelance Writer in 30 Days, and is a craft brew expert if you need a new beer suggestion.  Shawndra is pretty awesome...and we'll forgive her for being a Cleveland Browns fan...Get To Know a little bit about Shawndra Russell below:

SHAWNDRA RUSSELL
Founder, Shawndra Russell Communications
Author of Couple Friends
Freelance Writer, Researcher, Social Media Expert

CLUTTER FURNISHINGS AND INTERIORS: What drew you to the world of social media relations?
SHAWNDRA RUSSELL: 2 years ago, I took a leap of faith and quit my job teaching so I could become a full-time freelance writer. To do so, I quickly learned that I needed to be active on social media to promote myself and my work as well as connect with editors and media outlets that might hire me. I also spent two years as a marketing director for an international travel company right out of grad school, so I had that background and realized that social media is just a condensed form of storytelling. It's not supposed to be sales-y, but so many businesses use it basically as another advertising platform, when really it's a conversation. I knew I knew I could help business do better jobs at sharing their stories, and I love helping small business owners -- particularly Savannah and lifestyle-related businesses -- grow their audiences and teach them how to adapt to the changing online world.

CF&I: What is your favorite social media medium?
SR: I love Twitter. It's my go-to source when it comes to finding out what people around the world think about a particular topic. And so many people that I follow share amazing content that I might not have discovered myself. It's my newspaper. Plus, it's so easy to use and affords me the chance to interact with people that I might never have been able to reach through other platforms -- I was ecstatic when Candace Bushnell (Sex and the City) followed me back!

We're also big Cleveland Browns Fans -- I'm from Ohio -- and it's hilarious reading other fans' real-time reactions to plays and coaching decisions when a game is on.  I feel like I'm watching the game with a million friends. Twitter is awesome for events; I've actually live-tweeted several such as Savannah Stopover, Geekend, TedxCC, etc. and would be thrilled to see more businesses utilize the power of hiring someone like me to cover special events, conferences, openings, etc.

CF&I: As a writer, who are your influences?
SR: I gravitate to stories about human relationships of all kinds -- familial, love, friendship, self, etc. For my fiction (Couple Friends, my first published novel, was released last year and has a Savannah setting), I'm influenced by Nora Ephron, Lauren Weisberger, Emily Giffin, Jane Green, Claire Cook, Candace Bushnell. For nonfiction, I've really been getting into business books as I grow my business so I read Alexis Grant, Michael Port, and Jay Baer for guidance. But I learn from all genres and types of writers that are just plain masters at what they do, like Jack Kerouac, Markus Zusak, J.R. Moehringer, and Suzanne Collins.

CF&I: What is your go-to, read over and over, recommend-to-friends book?
SR: I don't read books more than once because there are too many good books out there! But for anyone coming to Savannah for the first time, I always recommend Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I didn't read it until I'd already moved here, but it gives such a great glimpse into our city. I also used to teach One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, On the Road, and The Book Thief, all must-reads. But for fun, I recommend anything by Nora Ephron. She's hilarious and has such spot-on social commentary; I watch When Harry Met Sally at least a couple of times every year.

CF&I: When can we expect your next novel to hit the shelves?
SR: Actually I have two e-guides that will come out before my second novel, Keepsakes, is published (also about love and friendship like Couple Friends). The two e-guides are career-related: Become a Freelance Writer in 30 Days will be out in July, and the other is a crash course in social media for small business. All three should be released before the end of the year, and I'm hoping to squeeze in a fourth -- it will be a nonfiction title, which was inspired by Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In and will celebrate inspiring career women.

CF&I: What is your guilty pleasure?
SR: Craft beer. My husband and I love to try and all craft beers, and we are the beer geeks who basically only order beers we've never tried even if the bar of restaurant we're at has our favorite brew on hand.

CF&I: Describe yourself in five words.
SR: Optimistic, adventurous, travel-obsessed, Savannah advocate.

Obsessions of the Week: 19MAY to 25MAY13

Some things we're obsessed with this week:
  • Measure: a fabric Parlor. Pretty into Measure's Instagram feed...literally looking at beautiful fabrics all day on my phone is making me the happiest little stylist around. Such great inspiration, such great pieces. One day, I will stop online stalking (or "stocking"...pun intended) Measure and go check them out in person.
  • Traditional Home Spring 2013 Digital Issue. Can't stop looking at the spread on Cheryl Day's favorite Savannah shops...including Clutter (above)...from pgs. 68-77. Lots of local love (including Measure, shopSCAD, and Paris Market) and we're so excited to be included. And the Back in the Day Bakery shots are awesome!
  • Black and White. Black and white patterns are HUGE on the runway and in fashion. And easy to translate into a beautiful statement in your home. Check out these great examples of Black and White chic from Pinterest:
  • NextMovie's: Versus. Especially this comparison of Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen. Hilarious!

Get To Know: Autumn VanGunten

Autumn VanGunten is one half of Savannah's trendiest blog, You're Welcome Savannah. But more than that, she's an entrepreneur, local business enthusiast, and social media icon.  If you haven't checked out her beautiful website, with photographer extraordinaire, Cedric Smith, try her on Pinterest/Facebook/Twitter/Vine (you get the picture?).

In the meantime, please get to know a little bit about, Ms. VanGunten!

CLUTTER FURNISHINGS & INTERIORS : What influenced you to start You're Welcome Savannah?
AUTUMN VANGUNTEN: Cedric Smith and I had talked for several years on starting up a blog that highlighted small business, fashion and art through photography. We wanted to focus on the smaller guy and give people and business an opportunity to participate with features and affordable advertising. With the shift in the economy a few years back we felt it was perfect timing so the YWS blog was born.

CF&I: What has been your favorite piece to cover on YWS?

AVG: I really adore our DIY pieces. I have the most special DIY contributor Lindsay Williams and together we have put together some really fun posts. She is now in the process of taking it over by herself for a time.
My favorite piece would have to be the first one we ever did because it was actually the first time I met her in person and she has since become a very good friend and someone I'm so thankful for knowing. Plus the Prosecco and lemon sorbet wasn't bad either. Try it. It will make you happy.
Here is the link for our first DIY! http://www.yourewelcomesavannah.com/2012/05/cocktails-and-crafting-diy.html
...I also am kinda obsessed with our Style Spreads. I love the intimacy that Cedric captures with the subject and their individual style. Our latest one with Isabelle Ewing is an example of how fun and quirky these shoots can be. http://www.yourewelcomesavannah.com/2013/04/ss007.html

CF&I: If you could feature one person for YWS, past or present, who would it be and why?

AVG: It's perhaps lame but I don't have a specific person but I have to say that I am drawn mostly to college kids. I love featuring them. I love the positivity, energy, and untarnished views that they hold. We involve them often in our Style Series that I just spoke of and I find them to be refreshing, new, and shiny.

CF&I: What do you love most about living and working in Savannah?

AVG: I love living and working amongst some of the most creative people in the South! The brilliance and originality that resides within this city is spectacular. However, I would like to see a shift in learning how to properly appreciate the talent in this community. Many of the complaints I hear are the same. People wanting work done for free. We need to change that. We need to demand that people and their talents are properly compensated. We could all learn to work more together. Be better together. It's a community thing. We have everything we need, except the mindset. I hope to see that change.

CF&I: What is your guilty pleasure?

AVG: So many...

Chocolate, dark, milk, white. I don't care. I want it.
Trashy reality TV.....I adore Andy Cohen and his genius of teaming crazy people together!
Too.Much.COFFEE!
Movie theatre popcorn. I don't share. Don't judge me.
Social media. I'm on it ALL the time..
Cheese dip, guacamole and margaritas with my girls!

Making fun of inappropriate things at inappropriate times. It can get awkward. Like crickets chirping awkward. As a child my nickname was 'Naughty Auti' and that name has followed me into adulthood and for good reason.

CF&I: Describe You're Welcome Savannah in five words.
AVG: Creative, Original, Beautiful, Quality, and Community.

Get To Know: Brandon & Heather Ainsworth

"Brandon & Heather"

BRANDON & HEATHER AINSWORTH
Owners, Southern Firefly Candle Company
Candle Enthusiasts, Southern Small Business

CLUTTER FURNISHINGS & INTERIORS: What drew you to the world of candles?
BRANDON & HEATHER: Over the past few years we had discussed the idea of starting a family business.  Something that would give us the freedom to be both creative and entrepreneurial.  We chose candles because they gave us the ability to start small and eventually grow into a larger business.  We knew going in there were many candles on the market, but our family motto from the beginning has always been "You don't have to be first, you just have to be the best."

CF&I: How do you come up with your different scents?
B&H: Well, the selection available is overwhelming.  We narrow it down by choosing the highest quality, and by customer reviews.  We then test many samples and blends before finally selecting the perfect new fragrance for our line.  Heather has a great group of friends that are more than happy to lend their noses and opinions.

CF&I: What is y'alls favorite SFF scent?
B&H: My [Brandon] favorite is the Georgia fragrance from our destination series.  It reminds me of my mom's peach cobbler.  That is one of the great things about candles and their ability to trigger memories.  Heather's favorite is the Nashville scent.  It was blended by her in our kitchen to pay homage to the city we love.

CF&I: What is your favorite thing about living in the south?
B&H: Bar-B-Que!!!  You've got to love a food that causes at least five different states to argue over who has the best.

CF&I: What is your guilty pleasure?
B&H: (Brandon) Bar-B-Que; (Heather) Anything monogrammed!

CF&I: Describe Southern Fire Fly Candle Company in five words.
B&H: Quality, Classic, Style, Natural, Eco-friendly.
