Get To Know: Emily McCarthy

The multi-hyphenate that is THE Emily McCarthy (brand stylist - lifestyle designer - curator - blogger) is set to take Savannah and the Coastal Empire by storm. Her beautiful website is a blend of Lilly Pulitzer funk, Tory Burch sophistication, and Emily's own fanciful flavor. If you're looking for a custom monogram or just some design inspiration, look no further than Savannah's own, Mrs. McCarthy. Get to know a little bit more about her and her amazing company, Emma J Designs, below:

CF&I: What all encompasses the job of “Lifestyle Designer”? It sounds amazing.
EMILY MCCARTHY: I love the term Lifestyle Designer because it encompasses everything I love to design. I have a degree in Graphic Design and Photography, but “Graphic Designer” always felt like it didn’t explain my full realm of design. Although I am designing the visual graphic elements of a product, brand or wedding, I feel that the materials and overall aesthetic of the final product are just as important. There are designers that produce beautiful graphics; however, I feel that I’m able to bring product design and printing experience to the table, which allows me to provide a wider array of attention to detail. I like to believe that I’m styling an entire brand from the logo down to the paper selection and packaging for the product. The client receives a more cohesive final product by working this way.  I’m also designing a lifestyle brand for my own collection – I hope to bring a new version of southern style to the market.

CF&I: What are your go-to design elements right now? We know you’re a Greek Key girl…any other signature Emily McCarthy looks of the moment.
EM:  You’re right! Greek key is a go to and has been for years – long before it flooded our pinterest feeds. But what I love about my signature greek key pattern is that I created it out of my initials – so it’s classic greek key but a different twist. I feel like it’s a bit more authentic this way and I often design for my branding clients this way. I incorporate elements of their logo into classic pattern design to compliment their brand. This way, the client receives original patterns – not stock that is accessible to everyone.  Going back to patterns, cheetah and animal prints have always been a love of mine too. We just painted a cheetah accent wall in my studio and I adore it. We also just had Daisy Sullivant hand-paint our dining room – a huge orange Kelly Wearstler inspired accent wall and a gold brushed wall to anchor the surrounding walls. Daisy used to work for Kelly and she is UBER talented. I adore geometrics – much more than florals. I like clean repeats and 1-2 color patterns.

CF&I: If you could give a Lifestyle makeover to any celebrity, who would it be and why?
EM: I would love to do a Dorothy Draper twist on someone – maybe someone drastic…cough cough...Miley.

CF&I: Your home is beautiful…we professionally stalk you on Instagram. What is your favorite room in your house at the moment? What elements really stand out?
EM: You are too funny! I stalk your instagram too! Of course for new goodies for my home! I would say it’s a toss up between the living room and dining room.  The living room has freshly painted floor to ceiling pure white paint, black and white striped window treatments from Carlette and lots of gold, emerald green and black accents with the help of Kathryn Myrick and Clutter! I also love the oversized gallery wall that I keep adding to – everything from black and white darkroom prints, block prints, quotes to my son’s silhouette. Then….there’s the dining room that I talked about earlier. The white, orange and gold accents make my heart sing. Besides Daisy’s masterpiece, I love my Imperial Trellis accent chairs from Alison Seeger and World’s Away bar cart set up. I’m a sucker for vintage mid-century barware – it’s a serious problem.

CF&I: What style rules do you live by? Any that you love to break?!
EM: No rules necessary, I just wear what I like – don’t really care what anyone else thinks. I love mixing patterns, chunky jewelry, statement glasses and classic silhouettes. I also wish there were more bold patterns in women’s apparel. I often want to take some of my favorite interior fabrics and have dresses made from them – imagine a classic sheath in imperial trellis – delish! I also love wearing white year round – I think it’s all about the execution and the pairing of color and texture.

CF&I: Where can we shop Emily McCarthy products?
EM: You can shop online at www.EmilyMcCarthy.com/Shoppe or attend one of our Prosecco Parties! We are planning a few for Spring so make sure and join our mailing list to receive an invitation. We hope to eventually have a retail space but I’m waiting for the right spot to pop open.

CF&I: What does 2014 hold for the Emily McCarthy brand?
EM: Lots of new products! We are working on quite a few partnerships with companies to produce more serving pieces, glassware, linens, candles, accessories and maybe even apparel. Time will tell!

CF&I: Describe THE Emily McCarthy design in five words.
EM: Timeless. Stylish. Colorful. Gold. Bold.

Get To Know: Leslie Miller

Click on the photo to see Leslie's beautiful website.

Local artist and SCAD alum, Leslie Miller, is shaking up the art and fashion worlds with her beautiful fiber-based creations. You can find her in stores on both coasts and in collaboration with Project Runway alum, April Johnston.  If you don't know Leslie yet, it's about time you got on board. Get to know a little about her below!

LESLIE MILLER
Owner, Leslie Miller Design
Artist, Designer, Creator

CLUTTER FURNISHINGS AND INTERIORS: What drew you to fashion and jewelry?
LESLIE MILLER:  Definitely the people that I met in my last weeks of college and the Summer following. I had planned on going into print design somewhere, and doing small beading projects on the side, but once I met April Johnston of Mangled Courtesan, we realized that something about our styles worked perfectly together...and it stuck.

CF&I: As an artist, what is your favorite medium to work with?
LM:  Beads and sequins! As far as materials to embellish, I would say anything with a little bit of structure. Leather is high on my list and recently, taffeta. I also have a great love for wood burning.

CF&I: What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
LM:  I think the best thing we can all do as aspiring and/or established artists is to stay true to what we love. It is very easy to lose your voice in our field trying to please everyone, but someone somewhere is inspired and in awe by what you do.
I also think spending time working or visiting with other artists and designers is very important. It allows us to get a glimpse of their styles, inspirations and techniques and they gain all the same experiences with you.

CF&I: Where can we find Leslie Miller Designs?
LM: Right now, I have my beaded accessories in a boutique in Los Angeles called Orphic and in shopSCAD here in Savannah. The most recent collection by Mangled Courtesan is also in both of these locations as well. It is so awesome to find places that are so helpful and supportive to young designers and artists. It is all available via email as well and can be seen at www.lesliemillerdesign.com.

CF&I: What’s next for Mangled Courtesan, your collaboration with April Johnston?
LM: April and I are currently working on our next collection for Spring/Summer14, Purgatoire. We plan on showing in September and so far it is beyond exciting and beautiful. As April prepares to make a move up north, we will continue to work together, just with a few hundred miles between us. Look out east coast!

CF&I: What celebrity would you just die if you saw them wearing your work?
LM: Whew! This is good. Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine and Ellie Goulding. So much talent and style...yep I would die!

CF&I: What music is on your design playlist right now while you’re creating?
LM: A little bit of everything. Some days I love country and other days, Ellie Goulding and Lana del Rey. We are so lucky Pandora exists!

CF&I: What is your guilty pleasure?
LM: French fries! All of them.

CF&I: Describe Leslie Miller Design in five words.
LM: Intricate. Delicate. Sparkle. OOAK. (I know only 5 words! One of a kind)

Get To Know: Meredith Anne Sutton

We initially tripped to Meredith Anne Sutton's beautiful jewelry after a trip to Savannah's Paris Market. Then, after reading this beautiful You're Welcome Savannah piece on Ms. Sutton, we had to have some of her work. Right now, we're only owners of a pair of shotgun shell cufflinks, but I'm saving some funds to get all in on this up and coming jewelry afficianado. Please take the time to get to know a little bit about Savannah's own, Meredith Anne Sutton!

MEREDITH ANNE SUTTON
Owner, Meredith Anne Sutton Jewelry
Jewelry Designer, Artist

CLUTTER FURNISHINGS AND INTERIORS: What drew you to the world of jewelry artistry?
MEREDITH ANNE SUTTON:  When I began my studies at SCAD, my focus was Graphic Design.  During my sophomore year I took an Intro to Jewelry course as an elective and never looked back. I was intrigued by the work of a close friend who was majoring in Metals and Jewelry. Her work was provocative and inspired my love of sculpture. Two weeks into the Intro course, I knew I would be a jewelry designer.

CF&I: What was the first piece of jewelry you remember owning?
MAS: A 14k gold Garnet ring that my father gave me. I’m a Capricorn and Garnet is my birthstone. At a very young age, maybe four, I spotted it in a jewelry store while we were out and about. He bought it for me and I have kept the ring close ever since.

CF&I: What is your favorite medium to work with?
MAS:  Gold, but it is so cost prohibitive for experimentation. Right now, I am very hot on brass. I’ve made about 45 bracelets in the last three weeks, each one-of-a-kind. With brass, I can have fun with my designs and experiment without risking next month’s rent.

CF&I: If you could design for a celebrity, past or present, who would it be and why?
MAS:  Madonna of course.  Much of my design aesthetic merges the industrial, or unrefined, with a truly feminine undercurrent, which I feel would compliment Madonna’s dichotomously masculine and feminine sex appeal. But also because she is amazing and does some crazy sh*%.

CF&I: Who are your design influences?
MAS:  While I have great admiration and respect for a number of past and present designers, I aspire to hone and honor my own style. I am highly visual and so I find inspiration in vintage materials, in nature, and via structures in the built environment. I once created a set of cuffs that were inspired by highway intersections.

CF&I: What was the best part about attending Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD)?
MAS:  The state-of-the-art facilities and industry leaders that SCAD brings to campus.  Also the relationships and support I’ve received as an alumnus.

CF&I: What is your guilty pleasure?
MAS: My boyfriend’s homebrewed beer, which is soon to be shared with all of Savannah once his brewery is up and running.

CF&I: Describe your jewelry in five words.
MAS:  Made in Savannah, by me.

Obsessions of the Week: 19MAY to 25MAY13

Some things we're obsessed with this week:
  • Measure: a fabric Parlor. Pretty into Measure's Instagram feed...literally looking at beautiful fabrics all day on my phone is making me the happiest little stylist around. Such great inspiration, such great pieces. One day, I will stop online stalking (or "stocking"...pun intended) Measure and go check them out in person.
  • Traditional Home Spring 2013 Digital Issue. Can't stop looking at the spread on Cheryl Day's favorite Savannah shops...including Clutter (above)...from pgs. 68-77. Lots of local love (including Measure, shopSCAD, and Paris Market) and we're so excited to be included. And the Back in the Day Bakery shots are awesome!
  • Black and White. Black and white patterns are HUGE on the runway and in fashion. And easy to translate into a beautiful statement in your home. Check out these great examples of Black and White chic from Pinterest:
  • NextMovie's: Versus. Especially this comparison of Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen. Hilarious!
